AN Exquisite wedding present comprising a huge crystal basket, bowl and a horn, on her 15th wedding anniversary from her husband, provided Datin Judy Ham with the perfect hobby. Then years down the line, that hobby is now a thriving business, called the Crystal Gift Centre in Amcorp Mall.
"I never thought that those lovely crystals would stir up such a passion within me. In fact, I discovered crystals made excellent gifts and are collectors items, and that it was a rather good business to venture into," she said.
She first started operating at the Lot 10 Shopping Centre in 1990, and later moved the business to Amcorp Mall in PJ.
"Most of my clients are from the corporate sector and they were regulars, so when I moved to PJ they followed me," she said. Ham said there were many who enjoyed keeping crystals for different reasons. Some collect them for their beauty or as gift items.
"Most of my Chinese clients prefer them for feng shui reasons. Many believe that placing a crystal object at a strategic point would help ward off bad elements and bring good chi," said Ham.
Many of her customers would buy a clear round crystal ball for the home, which they believe will help them avoid obstacles in life and enable the smooth running of things.
The centre carries more than 3,000 crystal ware items, everything is either man-made or natural crystals. And the centre is the only one in the Klang Valley that features crystalware of different brands.
They have names such as Royal Brierley Crystal from England, Royales De Champagne Crystals from France, Polonia Crystals from Poland, Bohemia Crystals from Czechoslovakia, Orrefors Crystal from Sweden and others.
